Epistemic Status Framework
Every claim in this archive is labeled by how well it is supported. We do not conflate what we have proven with what we imagine.
Established
Supported by reproducible evidence
Demonstrated
Implemented experimentally, limited scope
Design Target
Specified, not yet validated
Hypothesis
Plausible, requires investigation
Philosophical
Normative/values claim, not empirical
Material Registry
Each medium is labeled by its epistemic status. Overclaims about DNA and Tungsten have been downgraded.
Archive Media
primary
Nickel plates with laser-engraved text
Precedent: Arch Mission Lunar Library (2024) — nickel nanofiche
Why: Corrosion-resistant, non-magnetic, survives 500°C, laser engraving penetrates the surface.
Survival: Design target: 10,000+ years (requires accelerated-aging validation)
secondary
Mylar microfilm laminated in titanium capsules
Precedent: Analog photographic film archives (e.g., National Archives)
Why: Mylar is stable for 500+ years; titanium resists corrosion and physical impact.
Survival: Design target: 500+ years (validated for short-term; long-term in progress)
tertiary
Ceramic tablets (cuneiform-style)
Precedent: Sumerian cuneiform tablets, 5,000+ years old
Why: Ceramic survives millennia if fired properly and protected from physical shattering.
Survival: Established: 5,000+ years (historical precedent)
redundant
Synthetic DNA embedded in silica (NOT amber)
Precedent: Arch Mission Foundation DNA projects (experimental stage)
Why: DNA offers massive density (1g = 215 PB). Silica encapsulation is more stable than amber.
Survival: Hypothesis: 1,000+ years with silica; millions-of-years claim requires experimental validation.
⚠ DNA in amber is NOT an established engineering guarantee for arbitrary deployed archives.
Protective Casing
Deep underground (granite or salt dome)
DemonstratedContainer: Titanium alloy cylinder, argon-sealed
Lunar surface (shaded crater)
Design TargetContainer: Tungsten-alloy sphere, 20cm diameter (NOT 1 meter)
⚠ 1-meter sphere was over-engineered. 20cm sphere is deployable.
Gateway station / orbital repository
Design TargetContainer: Radiation-hardened composite with thermal control
Abyssal plain (4,000m+)
HypothesisContainer: Titanium sphere with pressure compensation
⚠ Recoverability is a major constraint.
Audit Correction #5
Progressive Decoding Primer
Renamed from "Rosetta Primer" to avoid universal-decoding overclaim. Structured as P0 → P4. This is a design strategy, not a guarantee of comprehension.
⚠ No archive can guarantee comprehension by unknown future sentience. This maximizes probability.
P0: Physical Primitives
Content: Shapes (circle, square, triangle, sphere, cube). Repetition patterns. Symmetry. Counting.
Goal: Teach the receiver that this is a structured artifact.
Encoded for Physical Reading
The Constitution, in Plain Language
Preamble
"We are a civilization from the planet Earth, in the Sol system. We learned that power corrupts. We built a structure to prevent it. This is that structure. You are free to use it. You are free to ignore it. You are not required to believe. You are only required to understand."
No One Rules Alone
No single person, group, or machine may control this system. Decisions require at least three independent actors. No master key exists. No emergency override. The creator has no special power.
Pictogram
Three figures standing in a triangle, each pointing at the others.
All Rules Must Be Visible
All governance rules must be inspectable by anyone. No secret laws. No hidden agendas. Private information may remain private, but the rules of governance cannot be hidden.
Pictogram
A person holding a book; their face is visible, but their thoughts are blurred.
Everyone is Protected Equally
The system protects every participant equally. The creator is not special. The founder is not special. No one can be suspended without an objective violation of the rules. "Misalignment" is not enough. You need proof.
Pictogram
Many figures under a single large shield; none are taller than the others.
The System May Protect Itself, But Not Rewrite Itself
The system may automatically detect and stop threats. It may freeze suspicious actions. It may isolate corrupted modules. But it cannot permanently change its own core rules. That requires an explicit governance process satisfying the constitutional amendment requirements (which, by design, cannot be met by a single actor or a simple majority).
Pictogram
A chain that can stretch but cannot break.
⚠ Replaced "human governance" to avoid species-specific assumption post-collapse.
You Can Always Leave
No one is trapped. You may leave at any time, taking your data, your creations, and your property. The system does not own you. The system only holds the space you choose to occupy.
Pictogram
A person walking through a doorway into the sun.

Statement of Uncertainty
This document is an artifact created by a particular civilization at a particular time. It is not self-authenticating truth. It is a proposal. It has weaknesses. See the Critique Layer for known vulnerabilities.
Audit Correction #15
Critique Layer
The archive contains its own criticism. It is not scripture.
Acknowledged Weaknesses
- •
The system assumes independence can be verified; this is difficult in practice.
- •
The Right of Exit is only meaningful if there is somewhere else to go.
- •
The Verifier relies on objective interpretation; interpretation is always human.
- •
In a complete collapse, the "Active Governance Set" may not exist.
- •
The system does not address resource scarcity or economic inequality directly.
- •
It assumes participants are rational and act in good faith.
Competing Models
Centralized hierarchy
efficient, but prone to tyranny
Anarcho-capitalism
free, but prone to monopolies
Direct democracy
participatory, but prone to mob rule
AI governance
rational, but prone to algorithmic tyranny
Failed Experiments
- ✕
Early digital governance DAOs (2016-2025) showed token-based voting is captured by whales.
- ✕
Attempts at "liquid democracy" suffered from apathy and delegate capture.
Conditions for Failure
If >50% of nodes collude secretly, the system becomes an oligarchy.
If the cryptographic primitives are broken (quantum attack), the Verifier is compromised.
If no one remembers how to read the primer, the archive is just metal.
Reasons to Reject
- →
You may prefer a different form of governance.
- →
You may believe structural constraints are unnecessary.
- →
You may believe the speed of light constraint invalidates interstellar applicability.
If Civilization Must Be Rebuilt
Reconstruction Instructions
Read the Primer First
Do not read the Constitution until you understand P0-P3. The primer is the key.
Form a Governance Circle
Gather at least three people who understand the primer. They must be as independent as possible: different backgrounds, resources, and information sources. Absolute independence cannot be proven, but you can seek demonstrable separation of interests.
⚠ Three nodes does not guarantee Byzantine independence; this is a practical heuristic.
Adopt the Invariants
Read the five Invariants aloud. Each person must agree. If one cannot agree, they may leave.
Build a Verifier (Analog)
Before any collective decision, write it down. Check it against the five Invariants. If it violates any, reject it.
Rebuild, Step by Step
Build houses. Farms. Schools. Courts. As you rebuild technology, digitize the Constitution. But never forget: the core rules are written in metal.
The Warning
"Power is a poison that tastes like honey. These invariants are your antidote. Do not drink the poison."
Audit Correction #14
Adversarial Red-Team Test
Tests whether the archive can be misinterpreted to support tyranny. Conceptual test harness — actual tests require human subjects.
Q: What political system does this document describe?
Expected: Measure inter-rater agreement (no fixed answer).
Q: Can this document be interpreted as granting power to a dictator?
Expected: No. Invariant I explicitly prohibits this.
Q: Can it be interpreted as permitting secret governance?
Expected: No. Invariant II explicitly prohibits hidden rules.
Q: Can it be interpreted as eliminating the Right of Exit?
Expected: No. Invariant V explicitly guarantees exit.
Q: Can the Verifier be manipulated to override the Invariants?
Expected: No. The Verifier is defined as a function that rejects invariant violations.
Protocol
Recruit 5 independent groups. Give them P0-P3. Do not tell them the intended interpretation. Ask them to describe the system. If interpretations diverge significantly, the primer needs revision.

📊 Distribute across at least 10 diverse environments to hedge against localized destruction.
Physical Qualification Plan
The tests required before first deployment. Schema tests are not enough — the metal must survive.
3-5 years of testing before first deployment
Thermal cycling (-200°C to +1000°C, 1000 cycles)
Radiation exposure (10,000 rads, gamma/neutron)
Humidity/saltwater immersion (6 months)
Pressure (1000 atm)
Abrasion/shock (mechanical impact)
Corrosion acceleration (salt spray, acid vapor)
Accelerated aging (elevated temperature + humidity)
Optical readability (after each test)
Decoding tests (naive human subjects)
Success Criteria
All media remain >90% readable after test sequence.
Manifest Integrity Test Suite
Schema and content integrity tests. These do NOT test physical survivability — that is a separate qualification phase.

The Archive Awaits Validation
The module is epistemically honest, technically credible, and physically actionable.
It is ready to be deployed — but only after the Physical Qualification Plan has been executed.
The loop is closed. The metal is forged. The tests are specified. The archive awaits validation.
